Brian Ethram-Danes

Chancellor of the Exchequer

Brian is a close friend of King James. He grew up alongside the King, and has moved in the same social circles for all his life. His ability with numbers, and his trust in James, meant that the King was never in any doubt about who to appoint to this role when he acceeded to the monarchy. Usually Brian is a quiet member of the court, but can be both fiesty and cuttingly witty when challenged about his area of expertise.

His reports about the financial state of the nation to the court at Cellam are occasions he relishes; many at court look forward to these occasions too. Some of the discussions about financial affairs have given rise to the most entertaining of political confrontations; Countess Margery McConnell and Earl Cornan Lewis both have reputations for studying the financial affairs closely and taking these opportunities to raise challenging questions.
