Summary
Formed in 894 in response to the persecution of magic users in the lands which were to become the Empire, The Academy was originally a secret society that fed wizards and sorcerers into the Tholain invasion of all the southern kingdoms. Once the Empire was established, the organisation became a learning institution devoted to the support of all wizardry. It was not until the Empire fell apart in the 1040's and 1050's that the organisation went underground. When the Empire was in political turmoil in 1061, the majority of the street front buildings in use by the academy were closed. The organisation re-opened in many new guises, hiding behind other types of organisation as fear and wizards and wizardry grew throughout the south.
The Academy prides itself on the quality of its teaching; it sets high standards, and as a result charges premium rates for its members. It also offers fellowship schemes and degrees for those who can afford the course fees. While still being largely based in the former Empire, it also has two facilities in south Ticetia (Cellam and Colishall) and in several places across Caldonacia.
Membership costs are as follows: regular membership 250gp per year, associate membership (from 7th level) 350gp per year, master membership (from 12th level) 500gp per year. Fellowships are available on top of regular membership, these cost an additional 100gp per year.
The organisation is lawfully aligned, and accepts any of the lawful alignments as members. It used to teach all schools of magic, but no longer. Today it specialises in Conjuration, Divination and Enchantment, and also teaches Abjuration, Evocation and Transmutation.
