Legion of the Crown
After unification in 1341, Arthea became a single unified nation, with a single army. All the warring came to an end and the huge armies that had been maintained by all sides were no longer needed. Whole regiments were disbanded; some of the surplus troops were drafted into the Kings Guard, but most were demobilised. The former soldiers formed their own groups to give themselves meeting forums and opportunities to meet old comrades and renew old acquaintances. Over time these groups became fewer and fewer, fifty years after unification there were far fewer old soldiers to meet in this way and their groups took up affiliations with each other, then finally amalgamated or went bust. Eventually only one group remained, and they met under the banner of the Legion of the Crown which indicated its support for King Marcus by keeping this name after their final mergers.
Since King Robert seized the throne in 1384, support for the monarchy by this group has diminished considerably. Things became worse under King Siegfried, who banned the group. The ban was lifted shortly after James acceded to the throne, following a successful petition and enough grovelling from the guilds leaders. They did agree not to be an outspoken critic of the crown again, and to open its doors to any warriors who wished to be members.
As a result of this final agreement, the guild has a slightly complicated membership system. They may have allowed anyone into the guild, but were going to make sure that non soldiers would pay extra. The lowest level of membership is Ordinary Member; this is open to all and is not the cheapest at 110gp per year. Above this is 'Military Membership', open to anyone who has served in one of the national armies, fees for this are 100gp per year. Above this, and at a cost of 125gp per year, is 'Veteran Membership', which is open to anyone who has seen actual combat duty while serving in an army. Above this comes 'Officer Membership' which is open to anyone who has served in an army as an officer, the cost of this is 150gp per year. Finally, above all these comes 'Veteran Officer Membership' which is for all former army officers who have seen actual combat duty, this costs 200gp per year and is an honoured position in the guild. Anyone who buys an officer membership to this guild is entitled to keep their officer rank while dealing with the guild.
