Transmutation Incognito
Alignments: any non-evil.
The rise of alchemy in Arthea gave rise to organisations that seemed to challenge the world of magic. The ultimate goal of alchemy was always the promise of turning common metals into gold, a task that magic users had been able to do since before the Disaster. The threat of alchemy creeping up on the world of magic had become something of a fear among wizards in the 1100's - their own world could be turned upside down if non-magical substances could be made to carry out seemingly magical effects.
Transmutation Incognito was formed almost by accident; a group of transmutation specialists took it upon themselves to prove to those in the world of magic that there was nothing to fear from alchemy. The approached this from two angles; firstly, they demonstrated to magic users everywhere that alchemy was nowhere near as accomplished as they feared - and that it would be an awful long time, if ever, before it was. Secondly they approached alchemists and showed them the futility of their art by demonstrating the magic abilities. They caused something of a riot among alchemists at first in southern Ticetia, then in western Caldonacia where they approached alchemists and demonstrated the power of magic. The promise was, for a small fee, to transmute any item the alchemist chose into pure gold. They used the spell "Polymorph Any Object" which, as any capable wizard will tell you, had a duration which varies depending on the type of object transmuted. As the items were generally metal, they had quite a long duration (often up to a week), which was plenty of time for the wizards to disappear. Even on the rare occasions that the duration was less than 12 hours, there was enough escape time.
Much mirth was had by the wizards carrying this out. They were never caught. Polymorph Any Object is, of course, an 8th level magic user spell, and so those carrying this out were not newly trained in their craft. The money they made was largely inconsequential, but caused the alchemists who were "hit" some embarrassment. Eventually, the group returned to Ticetia, but were did not have the courage to head for the south of the land. Instead they settled in the north and continued the studies into transmutation that they had begun while on the road between towns around the land.
The modern day incarnation of this sect seldom makes mention of its roots, and many alchemists still do not know the full story of what happened to their ancestors. The sect is mainly based in Chastham, Callenhall and Hallow, but has some kind of representation in most north Ticetian towns and cities.
Membership costs are as follows: regular membership 150gp per year, associate membership (from 4th level) 250gp per year, master membership (from 8th level) 300gp per year.
Their alignment is chaotic good, but they accept any non-evil alignment. They specialise in the Transmutation school, but also teach Enchantment and Abjuration.
