Oliver DeFarranus

In the earliest days of Empire, the lands of the south were wild by comparison to modern day. Along eastern stretches of the Jorlinum Mountains, along the line of the Tholain border, there were the wildest creatures of all. These monsters used the warmth of the southern lands to provide food for themselves, hunting wild cattle and sheep and taking them back to the snow covered mountains of their homes. These creatures were giant people, monsters, Giants.

They interfered little with the humans that lived along the eastern coast - they seldom crossed paths, and there was at this time plenty of food for hunting and land for farming. Until the worst of winters landed. Cold and snows came down from the mountains, and with it came the Giants looking for food. Their usual spring hunting lands were deep with snow well into Abanacon. The newly settled Tholain town of Marbesh found itself on the front line as hordes of giants came from the mountains into the hills to the west of the town.

While the people weren't directly attacked, their farms were raided and their livestocks taken. This was like handing them a death sentence - there was suddenly no food to go around. The town needed a hero, a man that could take action.

And up stepped on such man. Olivier DeFarranus was a warrior. He'd been stranded in Port Epredes at the early onset of the previous winter. The roads south had been blocked by snow, and the port was shut becaues of the howling winds since the previous Vinuada. He had taken life a little easy during this extended winter. He chose to stay in the port, even as the roads became clear in Juem, the ten (or likely much more) day journey to Nareth by road in the snow was not appealing, and he decided to wait until an experienced boat was heading that way. While he waited the rumours of Giant assault grew, he felt the need to be involved.

Overnight he travelled west to Marbesh, where he met and talked to many of the farmers. He was soon fired up by stories that made his blood boil. With just a few hours rest that afternoon, he waited the invasion that same night.

The giants came, and DeFarranus swung his massive two handed sword. In the darkness, amid the snow, he clove his way through several of the creatures before they ran. He didn't pursue them that night, they'd been beaten back. And he knew they were huge creatures, and difficult to hide amid the snow-covered uplands of the mountain range.

The following morning he packed some food and headed out to the mountains hunting his enemy. He left a message to send help if he wasn't back within the month. In the end he was gone just a week week, and returned when his food ran out. His clothes were splattered with the blood of his enemies, and he'd taken several mighty blows. But the Giants had been dealt a fatal blow.

Whether he killed them all is not known, but those he didn't deal with were driven away. Since his return to the town of Marbesh there have been no more sightings of giants amid the mountains of East Jorlinum.
